Morning Walk

Setting:  A Saturday Morning.

Characters:
Kim: The Girl.
Carrie Bradshaw: Bichon Poodle fluffy furball. Probably five years old.
Nina: Jack Russell. Definitely 16 years old.

Kim gets the leashes ready. Carrie Bradshaw yawns, stretches, remaining rather disinterested.

Carrie Bradshaw: Go on without me. I've decided to sleep in today.

Kim: Ha! That's what you think. Come on.

Carrie Bradshaw: (curls up) Nah, it's a bit chilly. I'll be fine. WHAT THE--??

Kim snaps on Carrie's collar. Nina, already leashed up snickers.

Kim: Remember the rules: exercise, discipline, affection in that order. It's what the Dog Whisperer prescribes.

Carrie Bradshaw: (indignant) Who is this "dog Whisperer" of whom you speak? You mention him often but how do I know he exists? I'VE never met him.

Nina: (ears perked) I have! I have! Well, sort of. I met one of his proteges. About eight years ago. Nice guy.

They head out door and start to walk.

Kim: (to Carrie) You may not have ever met him, but you've been raised with the values he teaches.

Nina: (trotting along) Yep! Me too! Well, for the last eight years since I came to live with the Girl. (to Carrie) What IS her name??

Carrie Bradshaw: (ignoring Nina for the time being sighs) You've mentioned all this before. Exercise, discipline and affection in that order.

Kim: Yep. You get the discipline through the exercise, and at the end of the walk when we get home you get affection. It keeps you balanced. Mentally. And fit.

Carrie Bradshaw: (thoughtfully) But what if my personality doesn't require two walks a day?

Nina: Bwahahahahahahahaha! (trips over leaf; sputters) Dammit!

Kim: (amused) All dogs need some form of exercise. Your personality is a figment of your imagination.

Carrie Bradshaw: (dryly) How dare you.

Nina: (snickers) It's a character you play.

Kim: Look, you both have great personalities. And you both deserve to have your "doggie instincts" honored. So... we walk. Twice a day. Period.

Carrie Bradshaw: (strutting by now) I suppose... and the neighbors DO think I'm cute...

Nina: (panting a little) Watch my pace... watch my pace... older dog in back... older dog in back...heart condition... heart condition....

Fade as the three round the corner and head for home... a little more slowly to accommodate the older one... and the Girl, as Alpha, sets the pace...

Nina: Thanks Girl! (to Carrie Bradshaw) What IS her NAME??

Blackout.

*Please refer to the introduction post in this blog for explanation and inspiration behind this blog. Basically, as Nina gets older, she develops various medical problems; the more carefully I listen to what she tries to tell me, the more I can explain to the vet what is happening. And Carrie Bradshaw simply goes by her full name.
